What is a Virus?
A Computer Virus is a malicious program
or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your
knowledge or consent. Viruses can also replicate themselves. All
computer viruses are manmade. A simple virus that can make a copy of
itself over and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such
a simple virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all
available memory and bring the system to a halt. An even more
dangerous type of virus is one capable of transmitting itself across
networks and bypassing security systems.
Since 1987, when a virus infected ARPANET, a large network used by
the Defense Department and many universities, many antivirus
programs have become available. These programs periodically check
your computer system for the best-known types of viruses.
A worm is a special type of virus that can replicate itself and use
memory, but does not usually attach itself to other programs.
A common way to get a virus is by opening
email attachments or downloading free software from unworthy
sources.

What is Spyware?
The term SpyWare refers to malicious software
that gathers personal information from your computer without your
knowledge or consent. The information is often used for advertising
purposes but Spyware may collect secure information from your
computer and transmit it back to the code writer.
SpyWare can also cause your computer to
slow down or encounter errors. Spyware has also been known to cause
unwanted "pop-up" ads advertisements, an inability to connect to the
Internet, and problems printing.
Spyware applications can be bundled as a hidden component of a
freeware or shareware program that can be downloaded from the
Internet. Once installed, SpyWare can monitor your activity on the
Internet and transmit that information to a third party. Some forms
of SpyWare can gather information about e-mail addresses, passwords,
and even credit card numbers.
A common way to get SpyWare is through the installation of
file-swapping programs that are used to download music and movies
from the Internet. |
